SPECmail2001 Development

Benchmark Workload Development, Call For Participation:

Dear ISP:

The University of Pavia (Italy) is working on a workload characterization project of ISP Mail Servers. To complete this project the University is looking for ISP's who are willing to provide sanitized data from their mail server logs. The University plans to synthesize the data collected into a generalized workload that it can provide to SPEC for a new standardized mail server benchmark, SPECmail2001.

The University of Pavia will act as a filter to ensure only the summarized data is provided to SPEC. The University will not release any ISP specific or confidential information to any commercial SPEC members. The University is also willing to sign any non-disclosure agreement you might wish, to ensure confidentiality of your specific data.

As an ISP using Internet standard mail protocols (SMTP, POP3, IMAP4) you have an opportunity to help drive performance improvements in the mail server system space. To simplify participation in this project, the University of Pavia has written several scripts that can sanitize mail server logs. Scripts are available to filter logs from Sendmail, Netscape Messaging Server 4.0, and Isocor N-PLE. The University is also willing to develop scripts to sanitize logs for other mail products if a sample log file can be provided.

If you are willing to collaborate on the benchmark workload definition, feel free to download the scripts available here.

The University of Pavia hopes that you will participate and is open to any additional input you might have on this project. You may also contact SPEC directly at info@spec.org or by calling (703) 331-0180.

Once you have the script output, please notify SPEC at info@spec.org.

Thank you!
